CASL Compliance
How we obtain consent, identify ourselves, and handle unsubscribes on commercial electronic messages under Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation.
Last updated: April 21, 2026
Who This Applies To
Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) applies whenever we, or a church using our platform, send a commercial electronic message (CEM) to an electronic address in Canada. A CEM is any email, SMS, or similar message that encourages participation in a commercial activity.
Consent
We rely on two kinds of consent permitted by CASL:
- Express consent — you explicitly opt in, for example by subscribing to our marketing list on the ShommyX Church website, or by signing up for a free trial.
- Implied consent — you have an existing business or non-business relationship with the sender. For example, if you are an active member of a church on our platform, that church has implied consent to send you transactional and community messages related to your membership.
We keep records of how and when consent was obtained so we can demonstrate compliance if asked.
Identification
Every commercial electronic message we send to Canadian addresses includes:
- The name of the sender (ShommyX Technologies Inc., or the church sending on the platform)
- A valid mailing address and a way to contact the sender
- A clear statement of who is sending the message and on whose behalf
Unsubscribe Mechanism
Every commercial electronic message includes a working unsubscribe link that:
- Is clearly and prominently displayed
- Can be acted on at no cost to you
- Remains functional for at least 60 days after the message is sent
- Is processed within 10 business days (in practice, we act on unsubscribe requests immediately)
You can also unsubscribe at any time by emailing [email protected] with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject line, or by updating your notification preferences in your account settings.
Messages from Churches on Our Platform
Churches using ShommyX Church are independent controllers of their own communications. Platform-level transactional messages (account verification, password resets, billing notices) are sent by ShommyX and are exempt from consent requirements under CASL. Community messages (announcements, event invitations) are sent by churches based on the implied consent of their membership relationship.
If you believe a church on our platform is sending you CEMs without consent or without a working unsubscribe mechanism, please contact us so we can investigate.
Record-Keeping
We keep records of consent, unsubscribe requests, and the content of commercial messages sent through our system, so we can respond to investigations by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
